Back to School: A Lesson in Financial Planning

Back to School: A Lesson in Financial Planning

August 13, 2025

The smell of sharpened pencils, the sight of brand-new backpacks, and the rush to get everyone out the door on time—it’s officially back-to-school season. While kids are busy learning their ABCs and algebra, it’s a perfect reminder for parents and grandparents to review their own financial lessons.

Lesson 1: Education Costs Start Early

Tuition, books, technology, extracurriculars—it all adds up faster than you think. Even if college feels far away, the earlier you start saving, the more time your money has to grow. A 529 College Savings Plan is a great way to put time and compounding interest to work for your child’s or grandchild’s future education.

Lesson 2: Don’t Forget Life Beyond the Classroom

Education planning isn’t just about college. As your kids grow, so do other financial needs—sports, hobbies, driving lessons, or even a gap year abroad. Planning ahead means you can say “yes” to more opportunities without derailing your retirement or other goals.

Lesson 3: Set an Example

One of the most valuable lessons you can teach your children is how to be financially responsible. Involving them in age-appropriate discussions about budgeting, saving, and spending wisely helps instill lifelong habits. Let them see how you save for big goals—it might just inspire them to do the same.

Lesson 4: Adjust Your Plan as They Grow

Kids’ needs change every year—and so should your financial plan. Maybe this year you’re focused on building an emergency fund, and next year you’ll ramp up college savings. Regular check-ins with your financial advisor can help keep you on track, no matter what life throws your way.

Final Bell
Just like a good teacher reviews the lesson plan regularly, it’s important to review your financial plan. Back-to-school season is a perfect time to sharpen your pencils—and your strategy—for the year ahead.

If you’d like to make sure your financial plan is ready for the school year and beyond, let’s schedule a time to talk.
